SCRAP BASICS- BASIC SUPPLIES

Sorry for all the posts in one day, but it was my birthday this past Sat. 4/25 and I have been spending family time and not feeling well and havent been on the computer, so I am playing catch up time.

This weeks scrap basics will be on basic supplies of scrapbooking. I will be talking about a lot of things over the months about supplies and also the basics of making a layout and the items that can be on it.

BASIC SCRAPBOOK SUPPLIES

THERE IS AN ENDLESS VARIETY OF SUPPLIES AVAILABLE TODAY AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO NOT LET THEM OVERWHELM YOU AND DONT PUT YOURSELF IN DEBT TRYING TO BUY EVERYTHING YOU SEE. ALL YOU NEED IS A FEW BASIC SUPPLIES TO GET YOU STARTED MAKING YOUR FIRST ALBUM OF MEMORIES.

THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO IS OF COURSE PICK YOUR TOPIC/THEME OF THE ALBUM OR LAYOUTS YOU WANT TO MAKE. NEXT, GATHER THE PICTURES (WE WILL DISCUSS MORE ABOUT PICTURES LATER IN THIS SERIES, BUT FOR NOW, USE WHAT YOU HAVE). WHEN PICKING YOUR PICTURES REMEMBER THIS IMPORTANT NOTE: YOU DONT HAVE TO USE ALL THE PICTURES FROM AN EVENT! PICK YOUR FAVORITES AND PICTURES THAT HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE EVENT. YOUR PICTURES ALSO DONT HAVE TO BE PERFECT... IF YOU HAVE SOME THAT ARE BLURRY OR OFF CENTERED, THAT MAKES FOR INTEREST AND THOSE PHOTO'S CAN STILL BE USED.

NEXT YOU WILL NEED TO CHOOSE AN ALBUM. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO PURCHASE ONE OR MAKE ONE YOURSELF. (THERE ARE MANY SITES OUT THERE TO HELP WITH THE MAKING OF YOUR OWN ALBUM, I WILL NOT BE COVERING THAT AT THIS TIME). WHEN SELECTING THE SIZE OF YOUR ALBUM, MAKE SURE YOU CONSIDER HOW MANY PHOTO'S YOU WILL BE USING AND WHAT SIZE PHOTO'S YOU WILL BE PUTTING INTO THE ALBUM. HERE IS A LIST OF STANDARD ALBUM SIZES.

8 1/2 X 11"- THIS IS A GOOD SIZE IF YOU PLAN ON USING YOUR COMPUTER TO PRINT OUT PAGES EITHER DIGITALLY OR MAKING YOUR OWN BACKROUND PAPER. THIS WAS A VERY POPULAR SIZE BEFORE THE 12X12'S CAME OUT.

12X12"- THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST POPULAR SIZE ALBUM. IT ALLOWS FOR A LOT OF SPACE FOR EACH PAGE AND IS EASIER TO WORK WITH. HOWEVER, YOU HAVE A LOT MORE TO FILL, SO YOU HAVE A BIGGER EXPENSE IN FILLING EACH PAGE.

8X8"- THIS IS A NICE SIZE IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH FEW AMOUNT OF PHOTO'S. YOU CAN BUY PAPER PACKS THAT COORDINATE AND SOME THAT EVEN COME WITH SEVERAL EMBELLISHMENTS FOR THE PAGES.

6X6"- A MUCH SMALLER ALBUM AND HARDER TO WORK WITH DUE TO NOT HAVING ALL THE ROOM TO GET THE POINT ACROSS FOR EACH PHOTO. IF YOU WANT A VERY BASIC ALBUM THIS IS THE SIZE FOR YOU. FIGURE ON ONE PHOTO AND A TITLE AND MAYBE A SMALL EMBELLISHMENT PER PAGE.

SOME ALBUM STYLES:

THREE RING ALBUM- THESE ARE EASY TO FILL AND EXPAND/ADD PAGES TO. THEY ARE INEXPENSIVE AND USE A STANDARD PAGE PROTECTOR USUALLY HAVING TO BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY.

SPIRAL BOUND ALBUM- THESE ARE SIMPLE TO USE AS THE PAGES ARE PERMANENTLY ATTACHED. THE PAGES CANT BE RE-ARRANGED. PAGE PROTECTORS ARE NOT USED.

EXPANDABLE SPINE ALBUM- THESE ALBUMS HOLD YOUR PAGES IN PLACE WITH A STRAP HINGE OR POST. PAGES LINE UP NICE SIDE BY SIDE AND ARE GREAT FOR DOUBLE PAGE SPREADS. PAGES CAN BE MOVE, BUT NOT AS EASILY AS WITH THE 3 RING BINDERS.

A LOT OF ALBUMS COME WITH SHEET PROTECTORS IN THEM, BUT IF THEY DONT OR IF THERE ISNT ENOUGH, YOU CAN PURCHASE A SEPARATE PACK. A LOT OF DOLLARS STORES CARRY THEM- 10 SHEETS FOR 1.00. TRY TO GET PROTECTORS THAT ARE PVC FREE TO KEEP YOUR PHOTOS SAFE. MOST ARE TOP LOADING, ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SIDE-LOADING AND SPECIALTY STYLES AS WELL.

THERE ARE MANY MORE TYPES OF ALBUMS OUT THERE. HERE ARE SOME LINKS WITH EXAMPLES.

THE NEXT ITEM YOU WILL NEED IS PAPER IF YOUR ALBUM DOESN'T ALREADY COME WITH IT. I SUGGEST GETTING PAPER AT A CRAFT STORE WHETHER LOCAL TO YOUR HOME OR ONLINE, AND NOT FROM AN OFFICE SUPPLY STORE AS YOU SHOULD USE ACID FREE PAPER WHICH WILL PRESERVE YOUR MEMORIES A LOT LONGER.
HERE IS A WRITE-UP FROM - http://www.thescrapbookingsource.com/index.html

Acid & Lignin Free Scrapbook Paper
When it comes to the protection of your memories and scrapbooks, no shortcuts can be taken. You may hear often while seeking information on scrapbooking how important it is to use acid & lignin free scrapbook paper. If you ever wondered why, here's the explanation. Acid & lignin free scrapbook paper means the paper has gone through a process to make sure it won't discolor or deteriorate. Acid free means the paper has been treated to neutralize the natural acids. Lignin free paper means the natural component "lignin" has been removed. Both steps are needed for highest protection of your scrapbooks.
Buying Acid & Lignin Free Scrapbook PaperThere are many places online which offer acid & lignin free scrapbook paper. Many items may say "archival safe", but note this is not the same as acid & lignin free scrapbook paper. Make sure all products you buy actually do state "acid & lignin free".

NOW HERE ARE SOME DIFFERENT TYPES OF PAPER:

BASIC PAPER- THIS IS A LIGHTWEIGHT PAPER THAT COMES IN A VARIETY OF COLORS AND PATTERNS. THIS IS NOT YOUR REGULAR COMPUTER PRINTER PAPER.

CARDSTOCK- THIS IS A THICKER FORM OF PAPER THAT COMES IN TONS OF COLORS, PATTERNS, AND TEXTURES. IT IS OFTEN USED AS THE BASE OR BACKGROUND OF A SCRAPBOOK PAGE. IT CAN BE RIPPED, CRUMPLED, USED FOR MATS FOR YOUR PHOTOS, JOURNALING, PAGE DECORATIONS AND SO ON.

*** YOU CAN BUY PAPER STACKS THAT ALL COORDINATE TOGETHER. THIS IS USUALLY CHEAPER THAN BUYING INDIVIDUAL SHEETS AND YOU HAVE MORE TO WORK WITH AND LEFTOVERS FOR ANOTHER PROJECT.

SPECIALTY PAPERS- THESE INCLUDE VELLUM, MULBERRY, PARCHMENT, AND OTHER HOMEMADE PAPERS. THESE ARE NOT IMPORTANT YET. I SUGGEST CARDSTOCK AND PATTERNED PAPER FOR YOUR FIRST FEW ALBUMS/PAGES.

CUTTING TOOLS-

YOU CAN USE SCISSORS IF YOU ARE HANDY ENOUGH TO CUT A DECENT LINE/SHAPE WITH THEM. FINE TIPPED SCISSORS ARE GREAT FOR DETAIL AND SMALL INTRIQUETTE LINES/LETTERS. ANOTHER GREAT TOOL IS THE PAPER TRIMMER. THERE ARE SO MANY SIZES AND STYLES AND BRANDS OUT THERE, THAT IT IS BASICALLY UP TO THE USER AS FAR AS WHICH ONE IS BEST FOR THEM. I SUGGEST THAT IF YOU PLAN ON DOING MORE SCRAPBOOKING/PAPER CRAFTING IN THE FUTURE TO INVEST IN A 12X12 CUTTER. THERE IS NO SENSE OF STARTING SMALL AND WORKING YOUR WAY UP, AS THAT MEANS DOUBLE OR TRIPLE THE EXPENSE. BUY RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. HERE ARE SOME LINKS ON INFORMATION & DIFFERENT TYPES OF CUTTERS.

http://www.scrapbooksbydesign.net/scrapbook_paper_trimmer.html

http://www.officezone.com/cutter_guide.htm

OTHER CUTTERS ARE AS SIMPLE AS A CRAFT KNIFE ALL THE WAY TO SHAPE CUTTERS LIKE CUTTERS FOR MAKING PERFECT OVALS & CIRCLES. AGAIN, START WITH THE BASICS AND AS YOU PROGRESS OR HAVE THE NEED, THEN RESEARCH PURCHASING FURTHER ITEMS.

ADHESIVES-

OTHER THAN PAPER, ADHESIVE IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF PAPER CRAFTING. THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES THAT IT IS OVERWHELMING TO CHOOSE. THERE ARE GLUES THAT COME IN BOTTLES, TUBES, STICKS, JARS, AND TAPES THAT COME IN ALL SHAPES, SIZES AND TYPES. LIQUIDS, SOLIDS, DOTS, PASTES OH MY!!! AGAIN, THE TYPE OF ADHESIVE YOU USE IS UP TO YOUR PREFERENCE. AND OF COURSE, THIS MUST ALSO BE ACID FREE!!! IT ALSO DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU NEED TO ADHERE. THERE ARE GLUES FOR PAPER TO PAPER, METAL TO PAPER, FABRIC TO PAPER, PLASTIC TO PAPER AND SO ON. THERE ARE GLUES THAT ARE GOOD FOR ONE ITEM, BUT NOT ANOTHER. SO MY SUGGESTION IS THESE 3 TO START WITH. A GOOD LIQUID GLUE, A BOX OF GLUE DOTS (EITHER FOAM OR CLEAR STICKY DOTS), AND A TAPE RUNNER. HERE ARE SOME GREAT LINKS ON ADHESIVES-

http://scrappea.com/articles/materials/Its_All_about_Adhesives_Various_Adhesives_for_your_Scrapbooking_Projects.php

LASTLY YOU MIGHT NEED SOME PENS/MARKERS. AGAIN, THE CHOICES ARE ENDLESS. BUT TO START A FINE TIP PERMANENT BLACK MARKER FOR WRITING IS SUFFICIENT. ANY PENS YOU PURCHASE SHOULD BE PHOTO SAFE, QUICK DRYING, AND FADE RESISTANT. FOR DARKER PAPER YOU CAN USE OPAQUE OR GEL PENS. YOU CAN SEARCH THE DIFFERENT PENS/MARKERS OUT THERE AND SEE WHATS BEST FOR YOU.

WITH THE ABOVE SUPPLIES, YOU SHOULD BE READY FOR THE NEXT LESSON AND READY TO START MAKING YOUR ALBUM. REMEMBER: BUY AS YOU NEED, RESIST THE TEMPTATION OF ALL THE GREAT THINGS OUT THERE. WORK ON ONE PROJECT AT A TIME, THIS WAY YOU WILL ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO FINISH SOMETHING INSTEAD OF OVERWHELMING YOURSELF INTO THINKING YOU HAVE TO GET ALL YOUR PICTURES SCRAPPED AT ONCE. ONE THEME/SUBJECT/ALBUM AT A TIME!

ENJOY,

FRUGAL FRIDAY- CHIPBOARD BUTTONS

Simple way of using a food box to make chipboard buttons.

***Be sure to save all your cereal and other food boxes and use them as chipboard. Great to make die cut chipboard shapes or letters, covers for homemade albums, and so much more! You can also find free chipboard on the backs of paper pads, inside paper packs, even in a new shirt! Nothing is better than free and recylcing.. so keep an eye out for any way to re-use and save money!
(Using your die cutting machine to cut out chipboard shapes is so easy, and better still, you can cut pattern paper to match the shape and have an easy way of covering the raw chipboard. You can ink or paint the edges of the chipboard to give it a more finished look.)

Ways of covering chipboard:
*Paint it
*Ink it
*Various types of paper (patterned, cardstock, mulberry, even vellum)
*Run it through a sticker maker machine and cover the chipboard with ribbon scraps
*Glitter
*Microbeads
*Buttons
*Rub ons or stickers

Have a great weekend!
